What is shutter speed ? Where and how it's used ?
Hello , guys welcome to Photography Life.
I hope you all are safe and healthy.
So what is shutter speed?
To answer this basic question, you need to know about what is actually the shutter of the camera.
SHUTTER of the 📷 camera
it's nothing but the physical part/component in front of camera's sensor which opens and closes rapidly when the shutter button is pressed.
The shutter looks like the following sample picture :
The sensor is visible (by default the shutter is opened) |
Now you got it , that what is actually shutter of camera?
So let's hop on to our main topic SHUTTER SPEED.
SHUTTER SPEED of the camera
The speed of opening/closing the shutter to expose the sensor to the light coming from the environment.
Or
It is determined by the striking of light onto the sensor for a given time interval .
Now I hope it's clear to you about shutter speed.
But you were wondering that amount of light is exposed to the sensor is also done by the aperture in camera lens, so why you should know about the shutter speed.
Here the twist comes,
Aperture is always used for focusing subjects according to your situation. If you want details here are my two blog posts related to APERTURE.

Now the main and final part arises that how do we use shutter speed in our photos.
Let's see the shutter speed chart first :-
I apologise for the bad resolution of chart |
By seeing this image you would get the point.
If not then don't worry , I'll tell you !
Here we actually don't memorise calculations (if you do memorise it's good practise) but we do it logically using the general rules for shutter speed.
General rules :-
- The faster the shutter speed, the light will come less onto the sensor, making the photo sharp and clear.
- The slower the shutter speed, the light will come more onto the sensor, making the photo blurry(if hand held)
*Recommended : while using slower shutter speed use tripods rather than hand held shooting.
You will definitely think that the image will be blurry using slower shutter speed then why we shouldn't be using faster shutter speed everytime?
No, this is wrong interpretation of the general rules given above photography is based on the climate/situation of environment.
- If you want to capture wildlife/birds/fast moving objects then definitely you should be using faster shutter speed.
- If you are shooting indoors like portraits or any light trails photos in night you must switch the shutter speed to a slower value.

These are some samples of fast shutter speed :
These are some samples of slow/long exposure photography:
Conclusion
- Faster shutter speed , crisp and sharp photos
- Slower shutter speed, blurry and long exposed photos
I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and I hope you got your mind cleared about shutter speed with some best examples.
So that's all for this blog post.
I'll be making a blog about exposure next .
